It was necessary to find the best way to communicate to children what it means to have a rare disease, particularly neuromuscular disease. Thanks to this sweet, poetic and evocative fairy tale, full of interesting symbolic cues, the development of a new, less alienating self-image is urged in the person with disabilities, distancing him or her from the feelings of inadequacy and inability that often plague him or her. Through identification with the protagonist, the small but powerful Magician Matthew, one is offered the chance to focus more on the functional parts of oneself, the hidden and unknown potentials, and to give a different connotation to one’s condition. As in the best tradition of fairy tales, such a journey takes on the characters of challenge and adventure, full of emotions, allies, tools and even obstacles, in which the theme of illness and overcoming one’s limitations often appears evoked and made possible.
